To cap off a year in which the Film Society will have screened 41 films (26 of which having been screened since August alone), we will be celebrating by crossing a film that has long been on the society's request list, Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia (1996).
Whilst not technically a Christmas film, and arguably not the go-to Paul Thomas Anderson Christmas movie with both Boogie Nights (1997) and Phantom Thread (2017) having scenes set at Christmas, its themes of returning to confront generational and familial trauma (all within a mosaic of diversely quirky interrelated characters having absurd experiences within the San Fernando Valley) arguably resonate most with the experience of returning 'home for Christmas'. So kick back, unwind and celebrate the end of term with a modern day 3 time Oscar nominated epic that's a top placer on the 2022 Sight and Sound poll of the greatest films of all time and features an iconic Aimee Mann penned soundtrack!
Our screening of Magnolia will take place shortly after 1pm on Saturday the 13th of December in MAL B35 (Room 35 on the basement level of the Birkbeck Main Building on Malet Street). Tickets are free and both current students and alumni are welcome.
