On Friday the 5th of December, the Birkbeck Film Society will be hosting the first of three 'alternative' Christmas themed screenings to mark the end of term with a showing of Billy Wilder's 1960 classic comedy The Apartment.
Programmed by the society under the banner of 'Alone at Christmas', Billy Wilder's romantic comedy follows Bud Baxter (Jack Lemmon), an insurance clerk who, in hope of climbing the corporate ladder, allows his bosses to use his apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhatten to conduct their extramarital affairs. But one day he falls in love with an elevator operator (Shirley MacLaine) who he is unaware is having an affair with one of his superiors.
An instant classic upon its release, The Apartment won 5 Academy Awards (most notably for Best Picture, Director and Original Screenplay), is a top placer on the BFI's 2022 Sight and Sound poll and is a noted favourite of many filmmakers including Alfred Hitchcock (who wrote a personal letter to Billy Wilder noting that he could not tell him how much he enjoyed it and how beautifully made he found the film to be).
Our screening of The Apartment will take place shortly after 6.30pm on Friday the 5th of December in MAL B35 (Room 35 in the Birkbeck Main Building on Malet Street). Tickets are free and both current students and alumni are welcome!
