A Triptych in Japan: In 2021 the Japanese filmmaker Ryusuke Hamaguchi won acclaim (and an Oscar nomination) for his work on the 3 hour long Japanese drama Drive My Car, centreing around a bereft director of a production of Chekov's Uncle Vanya who finds a new sense of meaning through a burgeoning relationship between himself and the young woman who is required to chauffeur him to and from work.
That same year, Hamaguchi also won acclaim for his work on another film with romantic tendencies, Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy. A three part anthology focused around the romantic relationships of women in Japan, Hamaguchi's film won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2021 Berlin Film Festival.
It is to the delight of both the Birkbeck Film Society and Japan Society that we are able to once again collaborate to bring a film to the Birkbeck community. Our screening of Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy will take place shortly after 6.30pm in MAL B35 (Room 35 in the Birkbeck Main Building on Malet Street) on Wednesday the 18th of February. Tickets are free and both current students and alumni!
