Following on from our successful collaboration screening of Nine to Five (1980) last November, the Birkbeck Film Society and Women's Network have reunited once again to collaborate on a screening of feminist films. This time in a double-bill of two feminist masterpieces from 1966; Ousmane Sembène's Black Girl and Věra Chytilová's Daisies.
We will begin with Sembène's Black Girl, a social drama following a young Senegalese woman who, aspiring for a better life, takes a job as a governess for a French family only for her to be met with racial and class discrimination. We will then follow up our screening of Black Girl with a screening of Chytilová's Daisies, a feminist farce following two women who decide that due to the world being spoiled they should act as spoiled people too. Both films were featured on 2022's Sight and Sound list of the greatest films of all time.
Our screening of Black Girl will start just after 6pm in MAL TBA (Room TBA on the TBA level of the Birkbeck Main Building on Malet Street) on Friday the 30th of January 2026. We will then take a half an hour break before following with our screening of Daisies at 7.40pm.
