MAL B35, Birkbeck Main Building, Malet Street, London
Free
On Saturday the 20th of September, we are delighted to be presenting a double-bill of the comedy-thriller I Hired a Contract Killer (1990) and the revolutionary British romantic comedy Letter to Brezhnev (1985). A double-bill we are bestowing the title of "killer romantics" due to their unconventional explorations of romantic themes.
We will begin first with Kaurismaki's film following venerated French actor Jean-Pierre Léaud (The 400 Blows) as a depressed busines man who hires a man to kill him, before stumbling upon the love of his life, just after 2pm. Then we will take a break at 3.30pm before starting Chris Bernard's film about two working class women (I Hired a Contract Killer star Margi Clarke and a BAFTA nominated Alexandra Pigg) in Liverpool falling in love with two sailors from the Soviet Union.
Both these screenings will take place in Room B35 (Room 35 on the basement level of the Main Building on Malet Street). Tickets are free, and current students and alumni are welcome!
