In 1974, whilst simultaneously trying to edit his Oscar nominated film Lenny and choreograph the original Broadway production of the musical Chicago, Bob Fosse suffered heart attack. He lived to make an 8½ inspired film documenting the life of Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider), an obsessive film and theatre director who also suffers a heart attack whilst caught between two different worlds. But perhaps Mr Gideon does not meet as fortunate a fate in Bob Fosse's roman á clef as Fosse did in his real life.
Noted by Stanley Kubrick as the best film ever made, and recently named by Indiewire as the greatest film of the 1970s, All That Jazz (1979) is a surrealist trip of a film that has to be seen to be believed.
Our screening of All That Jazz will begin just after 6.30pm on Friday the 23rd of January 2026 in MAL B35 (Room 35 on the basement level of the Birkbeck Main Building on Malet Street). Tickets are free and both current students and alumni are welcome!
