Billy Fisher has long dreamt of leaving his provincial life in working class Yorkshire, perpetually day-dreaming of a fantastical land named Ambrosia. After reuniting with his old flame Liz, who presses him to move with her to London, Billy struggles to do so as a result of making a series of emotionally immature decisions that have left him being simultaneously in relationships with two other women, both of whom he is engaged to.
Directed by Academy Award® winner John Schlesinger (Midnight Cowboy) and based on the 1959 novel by Keith Waterhouse, Billy Liar (1963) is one of the more humorous installments in British New Wave cinema. It has since been heralded as one of the best British films ever, placing in the top 100 on a poll done by the British Film Institute (BFI) in 1999 and placing 12th on Total Film's 2004 list of the greatest British films ever.
Starring Academy Award® nominee Tom Courtenay and Academy Award® winner Julie Christie, join the Birkbeck Film Society for a screening of Schlesinger's classic on the 1st of August 2025 at 6.30pm in Room 532 (room 32 on the 5th floor) in the Birkbeck Main Building on Malet Street! Tickets are free, and current students and alumni are welcome!
