Bess, a religious young woman in a coastal town in Scotland, has her life shattered after an unfortunate accident cripples her husband for life and encourages her to have a series of extramarital affairs in an attempt to help his recovery.
A pivotal entry in the Dogme 95 movement, Breaking the Waves won the Grand Prix at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival and was a breakthrough role for Emily Watson who was Academy Award® nominated for her debut performance in this film. It is the first film in Lars Von Trier's Golden Heart trilogy (preceding 1998's The Idiots and 2000's Dancer in the Dark) and has been widely considered to be one of the filmmaker's best films, earning a mention in The Guardian's 25 best arthouse films of all time list in 2010 alongside the likes of previous Birkbeck Film Society screenings Mulholland Drive and Citizen Kane.
Join the Birkbeck Film Society as we screen Von Trier's film on the 22nd of August 2025 at 6.00pm in Room 532 (room 32 on the 5th floor) in the Birkbeck Main Building on Malet Street! Tickets are free, and current students and alumni are welcome!
