If you're a fan of satire and meta-humour (or are just in need of a good laugh), this film is not one to miss!
After celebrating his 80th birthday, and, reflecting on his legacy, a wealthy business tycoon decides to finance a revolutionary film with a team of the top artists in the industry. However, with great talent comes the need for great responsibility. A saying that the tycoon wishes in this case worked more in practice than in reality.
Directed by the Argentine filmmakers Gastón Duprat and Mariano Cohn, Official Competition conforms to a style of filmmaking where social commentary engages with humour. It marks a reunion for Almodóvar muses, Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz, who follow up playing a revered playwright and his mother in 2019's Pain and Glory with turns as a shallow celebrity actor and a highly eccentric and demanding arthouse film director.
Join the Birkbeck Film Society as we screen Official Competition on the 5th of September at 6.30pm in Room B35 (room 35 on the basement floor) in the Birkbeck Main Building on Malet Street! Tickets are free, and current students and alumni are welcome!
