In 1981, the band Journey sung the lyrics #Don't Stop Believing, Hold on to that Feeling#. In 1996, Corky St. Clair took those lyrics to hit whilst directing a small-town musical comprised of amateur locals. What he and none of the people involved in the production would anticipate is that someone from Broadway will be in attendance and could make their dreams of fame and fortune come true.
Directed by Christopher Guest, Waiting for Guffman (its title a play on Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot) is the first in a series of improvised satires that would be followed by 2000's Best in Show, 2003's A Mighty Wind and 2006's For Your Consideration. Many of Waiting for Guffman's cast, most notably Emmy winners Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara and 2x Emmy nominee Parker Posey, would go on to become regular Guest collaborators and also appear in the three successive improvised satires.
Join the Birkbeck Film Society as we screen Guest's mockumentary on the 12th of September at 6.30pm in Room B35 (room 35 on the basement floor) in the Birkbeck Main Building on Malet Street! Tickets are free, and current students and alumni are welcome!
